Why This Digital Marketer Went Back to School for Computer Science
SEO and digital marketing is no longer just about keywords and backlinks – it’s about algorithms that consider hundreds of factors, automation, and adapting to rapidly advancing technology. Whether we like it or not, artificial intelligence and machine learning have transformed how search engines operate and how marketers, like me, approach optimization. These changes have reshaped the digital marketing landscape, presenting both exciting opportunities and new challenges.
My self-taught digital marketing journey has been built on a foundation of continuous learning. Though online resources were sufficient in the beginning, the increasing chatter about AI and other technological advancements quite honestly made me nervous. So, I made the decision to return to school and earn another Bachelor’s, this time in Computer Science.
Why Computer Science?
To me, pursuing a degree in Computer Science made perfect sense. It wasn’t about becoming a full-time developer or stepping away from marketing. Instead, I felt it would be the perfect way to bridge the gap between the creative and technical aspects of SEO.
I made my decision in 2021, before the release of generative AI’s like ChatGPT and Gemini – and I’m so glad I did.
By learning programming, algorithms, and data structures, I gained the ability to understand how machine learning systems, like Google’s RankBrain and BERT think and process information. Although I still have so much to learn, my understanding of these systems has already enhanced the way I approach SEO and digital marketing strategies.
The Journey
Deciding to pursue a Computer Science degree was just step one. I had to figure out how to find balance while freelancing free time and, well, being an adult! Thankfully there are so many online options and I was able to find one that fit my schedule and needs.
I took one class at a time, a slow but steady pace. Of course, life has a way of throwing curveballs. Over the course of my studies, a few significant life events disrupted my progress and forced me to take a leave of absence. On many occasions, I questioned if I really wanted to continue, but each time I did, checking another class off the list!
Finally, in January of 2025, I completed the requirements of my degree and applied for graduation!
What’s Next?
Earning my Computer Science degree is just the beginning of my journey into the future of SEO and digital marketing. With this new technical foundation, I’m excited to explore how I can push the boundaries of what’s possible in my work and for my clients.
Looking ahead, I’m particularly excited about diving deeper into emerging technologies like generative AI and advanced data visualization. These tools have the potential to reshape how we interact with both search engines and audiences, and I want to be at the forefront of that transformation.
Ultimately, my focus is on helping brands navigate the intersection of creativity and technology. I’m ready to take on the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly evolving industry, to embrace new technologies, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next.
